What supplies would I need for a home birth in an emergency?

I am pregnant with my 3rd child and I am a little worried about delivering before I get to the hospital. My first 2 were induced so I didn’t have to worry but I have a tendency to dilate a lot very quickly. I dilated from 2 to 10cm and delivered within 20 minutes with my first and 30 min with my second. Early labor took forever but once I was in active labor it went really fast. I shouldn’t;t be induced this time and I want to stay home during early labor but I also want to be prepared in case I go so quickly again and can’t make it to the hospital. what should I have on hand to be prepared for an emergency?

Clean towels, sterilized scissors, sterilized cording of some kind. If there is no STERILIZED equipment available, doctors recommend doing nothing. Just wrap the cord and placenta around the baby and wrap all in a clean towel or blanket. Using unsterilized equipment is fairly risky. You can easily sterilize by boiling in hot water for 2 minutes (full boil).

My hospital has classes on infant resuscitation, always a good choice for a new parent. There are also videos online on how to do that. If the baby comes out feet or butt first, don’t try to pull the baby out. Just let ‘em come out. Pulling increases problems.

Many doctors are so concerned about getting paid for a delivery, that they actively refuse to give new-to-be moms information on what to do in emergencies. They just say, call an ambulance. Yeah, really useful if there were a weather emergency or precipitous birth. This is so wrong, because it is unplanned births outside of the hospital that have higher rates of loss because the mom has no clue what to do.

My hospital has a large population of rural patients and recommends having sterile equipment with you in a sterile bag to keep it clean. A ziplock out of a new box is plenty clean, but I’d put it inside a second one.
