Hemorrhoid Treatment Options

Often the first sign symptom of hemorrhoids is slight painless bleeding. This is sometimes noticed as spots of blood on the toilet tissue. Whilst any sign of blood should be investigated, if it proves to be from hemorroids it is not in itself cause for great concern.

There are internal hemorrhoids, prolapsed hemorrhoids, external hemorrhoids and thrombosed hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids generally are painless and do not cause any problems unless they become pushed out through the anus after which they are termed prolapsed hemorrhoids. A prolapsed hemorrhoid may often be pushed back through the anus, although this is unlikely to be a long term solution. Hemorrhoids which cannot be pushed back will most likely require surgical treatment.

External hemorrhoids can be seen and felt as a lump outside the anus and may become itchy or painful, especially during and after a bowel movement. An external hemorrhoid may become a thrombosed external hemorrhoid when a blood clot occurs inside the hemorrhoid and causes inflammation.

The pain from a thrombosed hemorrhoid has been described as the most intense pain there is other than childbirth!

Hemorrhoid surgery is often required when they become prolapsed and thrombosed. The recovery period from hemorrhoid surgery is fairly rapid, but again, often accompanied by intense pain for at least a few days.

Obviously then, hemorrhoids are good things not to have! And should you suspect you have hemorrhoids in the very early stages of development it is best to take some preventative measures to encourage healing so you will almost certainly be able to avoid the more serious forms of the condition and the treatments it may require.

Doctors often prescribe a soothing hemorrhoid cream with unaesthetic properties and which contain steroids to reduce the inflammation. Whilst these creams offer short-term relief, they do nothing to address the underlying cause of the problem.
