Birth Doula?
What does a doula do exactly. I am thinking of hiring one. I had a very difficult birth with my son and the epidural DIDN’T WORK!!! So I was thinking that I want someone better equiped to help me handle a drug free birth, but at the same time I don’t want to be presured into not having procedures done or getting the drugs if I feel the need. How does that work?
I also don’t want my husband to be shoved to the side. He is pretty sensitive. He doesn’t understand why i want one as he is going to be there with me. I don’t have the heart to tell him that although he was wonderful in the delivery room, he just wasn’t as much support as i needed!!!
I’m so glad you’re considering a doula!! A birth doula is a labor assistant, and nothing more. Her job is to mother the mother – basically be a slave to your whims, but in a good way. 
Doulas are trained to recognize the stages of labor and know what goes along with each one, so that she can offer suggestions for positions, distractions, etc. that may help relax and ease pain in each stage. The job of the doula is to want what the mother wants – a good doula will NEVER pressure you into something you’re not comfortable with, whether you prefer a natural or a medicated delivery. That’s not to say that it doesn’t happen sometimes, that a doula (usually unintentionally) lets her own preferences shine through…but that is not usually the case.
If you decide to hire a doula, she’ll usually want to meet with you a couple of times before your big day so she fully understands what your desires are during labor, what comforts you, etc. – so that she can fully do her job. Expect for her to arrive whenever you call her during your labor (however early) and to stay for an hour or so postpartum – doulas can even help you get started with breastfeeding if you need the assistance.
If you’re having trouble finding a doula in your area, there’s a locator on the DONA (Doulas of North America) website at www.dona.org – if you’re lucky enough to have lots in your area and can find one that’s still working toward her certification, you may even receive a reduced rate for (again, usually) just as good doula care.
Sorry to write you a book – I’m actually working toward my doula certification myself, in an area where no one even knows what a doula is, so I get excited to see them mentioned.
